Pre-checked Cross Sales

There's been quite a bit of discussion of late on other forums about pre-checked cross sales.

I'm curious to hear what this group thinks of the practice.

jscott 07-08-2008 08:16 PM

Hmmm, i've heard a lot discussed with this too, but i've never really took part since i'm so new to the paysite owning scene

whats the benefits and downsides to pre-checked cross sales?

Toby 07-09-2008 12:23 PM

Hmmm... 20 views and only one reply?

As far as I'm concerned pre-checked cross sales are just plain deceptive and a short-sighted way to make a quick buck. Why piss off the surfers with such tactics? Forget about him ever joining another porn site.

The justification I see raised by those using them is it's how they afford the high PPS payouts to affiliates, but I also see them on revshare programs. In my opinion the end does not justify the means.

I will not promote programs that use them, and more than a few times I've dropped sponsors upon discovering them on join pages.

OK...now for the newbie (me) question... what's a pre-checked cross sale? :)

This particular example is from a RageCash site, PVC & Latex. I chose the $1 trial option, but that doesn't really make a difference.

Note the two checked boxes BELOW the Complete Transaction button and the fine print at the very bottom of the page. Those are pre-checked cross sales.

If the surfer isn't paying close enough attention to uncheck those boxes, then instead of signing up for a single $1 trial they just signed up for three trials.

Even if they cancel the $1 trial that they knowingly signed up for, if they fail to realize and don't cancel the others too then they get billed the original $1 + $1 for one of the pre-checked + $39.97 rebill + $39.95 rebill = $81.92.

Do you give fully access to all content for $1?

I have the same question with a canadian accent :D
Seriously, as I understand, the idea is not bad, you can catch more sales ...here it's the " dollar store principe "...all is is sold at 1 $ ...so everyone think..." 1 $, it's not expensive..."...but when they get to pay all, the total bill is over $50 , 1$ by 1$....As I know, CCBill don't let a trial under $2.99 ...

Yes, that is full access for 3 days for $1. Remember, these are usually programs with multiple sites and multiple servers. Bandwidth is relatively cheap.

Cheap trials are generally not anywhere near as useful for the independent site owner. A more effective trial option in those cases is a bit longer trial for a higher price. 7 days at $9.95 for example. Although as an affiliate I hate seeing a trial option on any revshare site. 50% of a trial join is chump change, and a relatively small percentage actually rebill to a full membership. I always wonder how many full joins I missed out on because they took advantage of the trial instead.

To get back to the topic at hand, you'll also very rarely see the independent pay site using pre-checked cross sales.

Prechecked cross sales are gay. If you want to offer them, make them VISIBLE and unchecked so it takes a mediocre of consideration by the buyer.

It's like if you checkout at a grocery store they don't throw the gum and candy in your basket right before you checkout but they do offer them there at your convience.

nyllover 07-10-2008 08:04 PM

Well...no wonder then there are people saying that if you work in the adult industry you are doing something illegal or anyway something to steal money from people...

This is a really BAD way to do business... in my newbie, humble, useless opinion of course ;)

I wasnt aware of thei cross sales, but I agree with Toby, that this surfer will never join any member site again. On top of that, I am sure that you will see a good number of chargebacks, that even cost you more money than you earned. I run my site with the principle to be fair to my members, to show them what they have payed for. This ones will stay and rebill each month. I even have some members still on my site that joined the day I put it online....

Agreed Toby! Pissing off the surfer isn't a great way of doing business, and I can't imagine it keeps them coming back for more.

jscott 07-17-2008 12:42 AM

I've heard Deecash overdoes it with pre-checked cross sells and exits :(
